A design that made a difference!

Back in 2021 I was newly doing stained glass full-time and wanted to create some kind of creative event that could take place entire online. Pandemic days where filled with uncertainty and I wanted to use my experience working in event design to bring some well deserved entertainment and community to makers.

I had an idea for a little bee design and while searching online to see if others had posted about stained glass bees that looked like mine, I started thinking about creativity and uniqueness. IP theft is rampant online and the pandemic brought a lot of newcomers (myself included) to start artistic hobbies and small businesses. Unfortunately, not everyone is careful about developing an aesthetic or their own and plagiarism is often excused away as inspiration. Speaking against these practices is often seen as gatekeeping.

I became curious with how many takes there were online, on silly bee designs for stained glass sun catchers. There were so many! Surely, everyone could draw a little bee, no matter their drawing skills.

World Bee Day was around the corner and it felt fated: I decided to create a creative challenge for the occasion. Weeks in advanced I started posting about challenging every artist and crafter who wanted to make a bee to draw their own, make the piece and auction it for charity on WBD. We all kept our ideas secret and shared our finished work on the same day, proving my point that everyone could come up with their own take on the same concept if they put their heart into it. No reason to copy anyone else, original ideas are possible even when making something so recognizable as a bee.

Hundreds of makers participated, bringing together the online stained glass community for the first time on a scale like this.
